PREMIERE MISSION DE L ASSOCIATION

Première mission d’un cœur pour la vie. Baptême du feu d’Un cœur pour la vie. La toute jeune association basée en France vient de réaliser sa première mission. Docteurs et infirmiers ont reçu 135 patients le 2 août dernier à la pagode Long Phoc dans la province de Lon An située à plus d’une heure de route de Sai Gon. Les yeux rivés sur son écran, Guillaume Nguyen-Forton, médecin et vice-président d’Un cœur pour la vie, installe le matériel. Ordinateurs portables, imprimantes et électrocardiogramme numérique, en quelques minutes tout est en place. Arrivés après plus d’une heure de route, le personnel médical et les bénévoles investissent les lieux afin de prendre rapidement leurs marques dans la pagode Long Phoc. Il est en effet à peine 8 heures du matin et plus d’une centaine de personnes attendent déjà que la consultation publique commence. Tous viennent de villages de la région, certains ont fait un long trajet et, pour la plupart, c’est la première fois qu’ils vont voir un médecin. « C’est bon, on peut y aller », lance le cardiologue. Chacun à leur tour, les patients sont appelés par leur nom. Sous le regard de Bouddha, les bénévoles les reçoivent pour un premier entretien. Ils sont ensuite dirigés vers les deux infirmiers installés dans la chambre du maître, Thich Thien An, transformée pour l’occasion en une salle d’examen et d’électrocardiogramme. Une fois les résultats obtenus, ils sont reçus par l’un des deux médecins. Le docteur Hoang Trong Binh et le docteur Nguyen Forton, secondé par son assistant Mr Nguyen Quoc Minh, recevront en tout 135 personnes en près de neuf heures. Prescription en main, les patients terminent leur consultation auprès des pharmaciennes. Devant une grande table où sont empilées des boîtes de médicaments, les volontaires délivrent leur remède à chaque patient, mais aussi du lait concentré. A l’exception des examens, les entretiens préalables comme les consultations médicales se déroulent dans une grande salle commune, mais le léger brouhaha permet aux conversations de rester privées. Et, si les patients paraissent relativement tendus au début de l’entretien, les bénévoles comme le personnel soignant s’appliquent, sourire aux lèvres, à les rassurer. Une seule pause sera possible, celle du déjeuner, organisé par les moines bouddhistes. Pendant une petite heure, toute l’équipe se retrouve autour d’un repas traditionnel, l’occasion d’échanger ses impressions sur cette toute première expérience. « Ici, les gens sont d’une grande pauvreté », explique Madame Tu, qui est à l’origine de cette mission humanitaire. Pharmacienne de profession, représentante d’un des plus grands distributeurs pharmaceutiques vietnamiens, Luong Thi Tu organise tous les deux mois une mission médicale chez les plus démunis. « C’est elle qui nous a sollicités », précise Hien Naina, la secrétaire d’Un cœur pour la vie. Créée il y a six mois, l’association a pour objectif de soigner les plus pauvres, essentiellement des enfants et des adultes cardiaques. En juin dernier, la société Stortz, sous l’impulsion de son représentant au Vietnam Mr Philippe Lux, a fait un don de matériel neuf d’endoscopie ORL d’une valeur de 25 000 euros à Un cœur pour la vie. L’association a mis le matériel en exploitation : les bénéfices permettront de multiplier les missions comme les soins – et il y a urgence. L’un des patients reçus en consultation lors de la première mission d’Un cœur pour la vie doit en effet être opéré dans les plus brefs délais. Monsieur Nguyen van Manh souffre d’une insuffisance cardiaque sévère mais facilement opérable. A défaut, il risque un accident vasculaire cérébral ou une défaillance cardiaque à tout moment. Sa disparition plongerait sa femme et ses deux enfants dans la plus grande précarité. « Cette première mission ne se terminera qu’une fois l’opération de Monsieur Nguyen van Manh réalisée » précise le docteur Nguyen-Forton. Les bénévoles de l’association Un cœur pour la vie attendent quant à eux avec impatience leur prochaine mission sur le terrain. Une mission prévue pour octobre. Caroline MARIE

A HEART FOR THE LIFE : their first mission

In fact, the first mission performed by this young Association whose starting point is in France should be called “the baptism of fire”.

On August 2nd, Doctors and the Medical Personnel received 135 patients at the Long Foc Pagoda situated in the Province of Lon An located at more than a one-hour drive from Saigon.

With his eyes strongly riveted on the screen, Dr Guillaume Nguyen-Forton, Vice-President of the Association, installed the equipment within a few minutes: PCs, Printing Machine and numerical electrocardiogram as well.

The Medical Personnel together with the Volunteers arrived after more than a one-hour drive. They first had a look over the place and settled down then. It is only just 8 o’clock A.M. and there are already more than 100 people waiting for the Public Counseling to begin. All of them come from villages of this region and moreover it is their first medical counseling for most of them.

“Everything is all right and we can start out now” the Cardiologist says.

In turn the patients are called by their names and under the Buddha’s watchful eyes the Volunteers of the Medical Team receive them for a first interview. Afterwards they send them to the 2 Medical-Assistants who are installed in the Thich Tien Room transformed into an electrocardiogram examination room for this occasion. Once the results known, the patients are received by one of the 2 Doctors: either by Dr Hoang Trong Binh or by Dr Nguyen-Forton who is assisted by Mr Nguyen Quoc Minh. They will receive 135 patients altogether in almost 9 hours. With their prescription in hand then, they finish their counseling at the Pharmacist’s : a large table on which boxes of medicines are piled up, all this being managed by Volunteers standing in front of it. They deliver their medicines to each patient and some condensed milk too.

Except for the Medical Examinations, the preceding interviews and Medical Consultings take place in a large common room where a light sound of voices permits confidential talks. If the patients show nervous anxiety at first they are quickly comforted by the Personnel who have a smile on their lips.

There is no other possibility for a break but the lunch organised by the Buddhist Monks. During a “short hour” the whole team share a traditional meal and this is an occasion for talking about the first experience of their Association.

“We could undertake this mission thanks to Mrs Tu, a Pharmacist who contacted our Association” Hien Naina, Secretary of A Heart for the Life says. Mrs Tu is the Commercial Representative for one of the most important Vietnamese pharmaceutical medicines distributors. “Here, people are extremely poor” she said. “ She organises a medical mission to help the needy every second month” adds Hien Naina. She herself started this humanitarian mission.

A Heart for the Life which was set up six months ago is aiming to grant medical care to the underprivileged: children and adults suffering from heart disease essentially.

Last June, the Stortz Co. through an incentive from their Vietnamese Representative, Mr Philippe Lux, offered our Association quite a new endoscopic ORL (for nose and throat introspection) equipment valued at
25.000 Euros. This medical material has been put in exploitation and the profits will permit the Association to develop such mission as Medical Care which is a matter of great urgency here.

Mr Nguyen van Manh who was among the 135 patients received during this first mission suffers from a severe heart failure which can easily be operated; it necessitates an operation at the very earliest otherwise he risks cerebral accident or a heart failiure any moment. His death would cause his family to have a very precarious life.

“Of course this first mission will end only when Mr Nguyen van Manh has been operated” Dr Nguyen-Forton says. As for the Volunteers, they are eagerly expecting their next Provincial Mission which is scheduled for October.

C’est à cause d’une angine mal soignée quand il était enfant que Monsieur Manh a développé un rhumatisme articulaire dont la principale conséquence est une destruction progressive des valves du cœur. Une intervention chirurgicale visant soit à réparer soit à changer sa valve déficiente permettrait de rétablir une fonction cardiaque quasi normale. Cette opération est aisément réalisable à l’Institut du Cœur ou à l’hôpital de l’Université médicale de Ho Chi Minh. Cela coûterait entre 2000 et 4000 US dollars selon le type de chirurgie (réparation, prothèse biologique ou prothèse mécanique). Dons et contributions permettraient à l’association de réaliser cette opération, et ainsi d’aider cette famille et de sauver une Vie.

Due to an angina incorrectly treated Mr X has developed a rhumatoid arthritis which gives rise to a progressive destruction of the heart valves. An operation that would aim to either repair the deficient heart valve or change it would practically permit to restore the cardiac function. That operation can easily be done at the Institut du Coeur or at the Medical University Hospital of Ho Chi Minh. The cost would be between 2000 and 4000 US dollars according to the type of surgery (simple repair, biological prothesis or mechanical prothesis).
Donations and contributions would permit the Association to perform this operation thereby helping a family and saving a life.

Livres et uniformes sont distribués deux fois par an. Madame Tu souhaite également construire une salle de lecture dans la pagode afin de développer l’enseignement pour les jeunes des villages environnants. En raison d’une grande précarité, aucun enfant des 2500 familles soutenues par la pagode n’a pour le moment le niveau requis pour intégrer l’université. Madame Tu aidera financièrement ceux qui suivront des études supérieures.

Books and uniforms are distributed twice a year. Mrs Tu hopes to build a “lecture room” inside the Pagoda in order to permit the young of the nearby villages to have access to education . Due to very small income none of the children coming from the 2,500 families aided by the Pagoda, has presently the required level to get into the University. Mrs Tu will help financially those who will study at the University.

Chers Amis,

C’est la rentrée et voici quelques informations sur nos dernières actions.

Tout d’abord, nous sommes heureux de vous annoncer que le petit Phuc ( opéré de son cœur en Février dernier grâce a vos dons ) a pu bénéficier d une cure chirurgicale avec succès de son bec de lièvre, le 27 août dernier à l’hôpital Franco-Vietnamien de Saigon. Il va très bien.

Depuis son opération cardiaque, cet enfant revit. Il a un excellent développement, adore jouer et il est très gai. Nous sommes heureux pour ce petit orphelin et espérons lui avoir donne de meilleures chances dans la vie. Merci encore a tous pour votre soutien .

Par ailleurs, nous avons beaucoup travaillé avec Médecins du Monde et la Fondation Wetter. Nous avons ainsi pu prodiguer des soins médicaux et non chirurgicaux à une dizaine d’enfants cardiaques.

La Fondation Wetter nous a en particulier confié 2 enfants cardiaques possiblement destinés a la chirurgie pour lesquels nous avons réalisé pour eux une évaluation spécialisée complète .

Malheureusement l un d entre eux était déjà trop malade et a succombé peu après ; Le second a finalement pu être traité médicalement sans recours a la chirurgie.

Nous suivons également depuis Avril un autre enfant indigent orphelin, nomme Thien Phuoc, qui présente aussi une malformation cardiaque grave mais qui a encore un trop petit poids ( 4.5 Kg ) pour pouvoir supporter une opération ; cela étant son état est préoccupant.

L équipe de la commission sociale de l Amicale des Français de Ho Chi Minh nous a également sollicité afin que nous leur apportions un soutien dans la prise en charge d un petit enfant cardiaque dont ils s occupent mais qui nécessite toujours des soins lourds et spécialisés.

L organisation Medecins du Monde, qui est surtout impliquée dans les programmes d adoption d enfants, a par ailleurs installé ses nouveaux bureaux comme nous au sein de l immeuble de la société GHS, qui représente notre Association au Viet Nam . Ceci nous rapprochera davantage et semble une bonne chose.

Ces collaborations se déroulent très efficacement. Nous ne manquerons de vous tenir au courant des prochaines actions.

Dear Friends,

Here are some informations about our latest actions.
First, we are pleased to announce that the young Phuc (operated from his heart last February thanks to your donations) could benefit from a successful surgical treatment of her cleft lip, on August 27 at the Franco-Vietnamese Hospital in Saigon. He goes very well. Since his heart surgery, the child has an excellent development, enjoys playing and is very joyful. We are happy for this orphan and hope it gives him a better chance in life. Thank you again for your support.

In addition, we have worked with Médecins du Monde and the Foundation Wetter. We were able to provide medical care and non-surgical heart to few children.
Wetter Foundation has entrusted two children in particular for a possible cardiac surgery for which we have done for them complete specialized assessment.
Unfortunately one of them was too ill and died shortly after, the second was finally treated medically without surgery.

We are also monitoring another child since April, indigent orphan named Thien Phuoc, which also has a serious heart defect but still has a too small weight (4.5 Kg) to withstand an operation, and this is his special concern.

The team of the Social Committee of the Association of French from Ho Chi Minh has also requested us to support them in the care of a cardiac child they are in charge of, who still requires heavy and specialized care.

The organization Medecins du Monde, which is mainly involved in child adoption programs, has also installed its new offices, as us, in the GHS building society, which represents our Association in Viet Nam.

These collaborations take place very effectively. We will surely keep you informed of upcoming actions.

Dear Friends.
Phuoc has been operated successfully thanks to your generosity mid January at the Hospital of University of Ho Chi Minh City, by Dr. Dinh , and he is going very well ;

he will return this weekend at the Orphanage… smiling.
This morning he told us Bye Bye with his little hand, he is in great shape.
The Vietnamese lunar year ends well and with a smile of joy and hope.
